Graduation violence

June 20th, 2008

What is wrong with people today, seriously. Graduation day is supposed to be a day of pure joy not one filled with violence, sadness, and fear. We sometimes have to ask ourselves, not only are our mayor and police commissioner doing their best to stop as much as the violence that is going around, but are we? We can try and stop being angry all the time, we can try to support ourselves and our friends, we can try and cause change instead of sitting around and excepting this.

Expect an article in the forthcoming issue bloggers

Half-way there

June 17th, 2008

The North Philly Metropolis is halfway completed folks. The community section is almost finished and our creative section is really huge and should be done by next week. That leaves only the in betweeners and a few other things and it looks likes the NPM might be ready for the end of the summer.

Politics, Politics.

June 10th, 2008

What can one say about the world of politics? To some its confusing and to others it is nothing but a pain. It seems however, that Philadelphia has had nothing to talk about (besides the mindless killings that still plague our city, civilian beatings, outraged youth, gas prices, lack of jobs, a low economy, etc) but politics. Last year this time it was a frenzy over who would be our next Mayor, Nutter, Fattah, Evans, or Knox. Now it is who will be our next President of the United States, Obama or Caine.

Some of us are glad that Hillary is out finally. She just seemed so worried all the time and looked to be trying to gather up as many supporters as possible. Barrack seemed (and most people would probably agree) humble and really didn’t care about the numbers, but who he could really help as President, who he could touch, and how he could do that.

In any rate this is still to be a facisnating election and hopefully we’ll have some facisnating articles revolving around it.

Wow

June 6th, 2008

Wow bloggers, a lot has been going on lately. Submissions for our health issue is coming in slowly but they’re coming in and I am proud to say that our sections are coming along well. Also, peakjohnson.com is coming along nicely which is exciting.

By the way take a look at the cover of our next issue by Mecca Ellerby.mcissues.jpg

A message from NPM Associate editor, Mr. Bob Shipman

May 28th, 2008

Yes, a lot is going on while preparation for the next issue is underway, but here is an important message worth reading…

URGENT
COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT
We need your help to save a 16 yr old young Black male falsely accused and arrested as an adult.

Greetings Family

We need your support. MWMSistahood@aol.com

What they are doing to our children has to be challenged and exposed.
If we do nothing, then their continued suffering is blood on our hands.
One of our “Rites of Passage students, Dasheem Ferron, 16 yrs old, nephew of and in the care of Sister Basiymah Mu-Bey, was incarcerated at PIC, an adult correctional facility on
March 23rd. 2008 (Can you imagine.)

His home was stormed by SWAT in the middle of the night.
He had been identified by a young female who is a known crack addict as being on the street at the time of a shooting and robbery. He was not identified as the shooter or a participant in the robbery in anyway. In fact witnesses describe an older male with a dark complexion, dressed in long winter coat
on a day when the temperature reached above 60 degrees.
Dasheem stated he was standing on the steps of a neighborhood store with a friend when he heard a gunshot from across the street, so he ran for cover. The owner of
the store will corroborate his statement and will testify that Dasheem left the store about the time the shots were fired, and that he was not dressed in a long coat.
We can all testify that he does not have a dark complexion. In fact the detectives stated themselves to Sister Basiymah when the stormed her house that they knew he wasn’t involved but they think he knows the shooter and unless he identifies him they were going to charge him. MWMSistahood@aol.com
There is absolutely no way Dasheem would be involved in such activity.
Dasheem Ferron, 16 years old, birthday 6/21/91, an11th grade. A and B student that attends Strawberry Mansion High School aspires to be a doctor never been in trouble
Student Government Association Deputy, does community projects with 31st and Berks garden, UNIA and Marcus Garvey Parade, and the David P Richardson African Centered Rites of Passage Program
He is one of the most gentle teenagers you will ever meet
He and his brother assisted last year with mowing the lawn and cleaning the Hatfield House grounds for the Drum Festival last year. He has worked with Bro. Zumbi as a laborer and painter and has obtained his complete trust.
In spite of all of this and Dasheem’s innocence, he has been charged with armed robbery, conspiracy, attempted murder and as many charges as the cops could mount.
We, in the African Community know that he is innocent of all charges.
They really have no evidence to the contrary. They altered his birth date to make it appear he is 18.
The judge refused even to move him to JDC. (Juvenile Delinquent Center)
His bail is $35,000.00. We have to raise $3,500.00 immediately to get him out, or he will sit in an adult facility for another month until another hearing is held.
A bail reduction request was denied.
We are asking you to assist me in raising the bail; most of which will be returned when he appears in court.
$100.00 or any amount that you can provide will be appreciated.
You can call Bro.Zumbi at 267-235-9111, Sister Basiymah at 215-668-1181, or Brother Supreme at 267-377-9552.
Please family. Another young life is about to be ruined

Officer Down

May 4th, 2008

cover.jpg

Yet again another officer is killed. This time for trying to stop a bank robbery. When will the senseless killing end we ask you. We here at the NPM are at different views in light of this incident.

Yes it is terrible, however, each time an officer is killed a thousand officers are sent to find the culprits. Is the same done for any other mass murderer? Can the same be done?

We believe that the individuals responsible for this will be caught. Like Johnny boy, the saying is true. You can run, but you can’t hide…

One of our founding editors and emeritus, Peak Johnson, is working on his own website. It is rumored that it will include information on not just the NPM, but also his other projects. Not to mention his stories that appear in almost each issue of the paper that he is planning on turning into a book.
